Hyperhidrosis

DISCLAIMER: Results may vary based on individual circumstances.

Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, can be a difficult condition to manage and live with on a day-to-day basis. As an individual with hyperhidrosis, one of the best things you can do is to keep yourself informed about the signs and symptoms of the different variations of the disorder, and the treatments options available for each.

Located in Unley, Australia, Dr. Matthew Holman can offer patients with hyperhidrosis both practical knowledge and medical guidance. If you’d like more information about our practice or are interested in scheduling a consultation, contact us today.

What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is chronic excessive sweating, typically of the underarms, palms, or soles of the feet. This disorder affects at least 3% of the global population, and can cause a great deal of anxiety and stress in the people that have it. There are primarily two different types: primary focal hyperhidrosis and secondary generalized hyperhidrosis. With each variation of the disorder comes a separate set of symptoms and accompanying treatment methods.

Types of Hyperhidrosis

This disorder occurs in two different varieties: primary focal hyperhidrosis and secondary generalized hyperhidrosis.

Individuals who have primary focal hyperhidrosis experience excessive sweating that is not caused by a separate medical condition or medication. It typically occurs on very specific areas of the body, including the hands, feet, underarms, face, and head. It is usually symmetrical across the different halves of the body: if you experience sweaty palms in your right hand, you probably also have a sweaty left hand. Sweating does not occur when the individual is asleep. This variety of the disorder most often begins in childhood or adolescence. This branch of the disorder needs to be treated medically or managed with prescription strength antiperspirant.

Secondary generalized hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating caused by another medical condition or as a side effect of medication. This sweat is usually experienced over a larger, more generalized areas of the body and occurs when individuals affected by it are both awake and asleep. This type is treated by addressing the primary problem that causes it.

Treatment Options for Hyperhidrosis

While prescription strength antiperspirants can help control the problem of primary focal hyperhidrosis, further treatments can, in some cases, contribute to improving the disorder.  For more information about the procedures that Dr. Matthew Holman offers for this problem, contact our offices today.
