Acne, very common skin disease in adolescence and adulthood, is a chronic and recurrent follicular disease which leaves a scar very easily. It degrades the quality of life not only psychologically but also aesthetically. There have been many kinds of methods developed for the treatment of acne, but they could not prevent relapse. This study shows the clinical observation of acne after the elimination of sebaceous glands through the new RF device using a micro-insulated needle.
Material and methods
For its safety and effectiveness on acne treatment induced by RF medical device using the micro insulated needle, the prospective pilot study for acne treatment was conducted through twelve patients with moderate to severe facial acne and Fitzpatrick skin types III-V. Exclusion criteria are 1) the use of oral antibiotics or isotretinoin for the treatment of acne within six months, 2) use of topical or systemic antibiotics within two weeks, and 3) pregnancy or lactation in female subjects. This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of selective sebaceous gland electrothermolysis for the treatment of facial acne.
Results
Mean lesion reduction at one month after the final treatment was 98.14% for inflammatory lesions and 83.09% for non-inflammatory lesions. Clinical success was achieved in the majority of patients (seven of 12 patients) at one month after the second treatment and in all patients at one month after the final treatment.
Conclusion
The acne treatment modality by using a micro-insulated needle is designed to target the specific skin layer at the precise depth where sebaceous glands are located without causing damage on the epidermis. RF medical device using the micro insulated needle and its innovative treatment modality provide a new concept of skin care & treatment for acne treatment with minimal downtime and no systemic side effects as like medications.
